##Radical Islamic opposition in northern Nigeria
Authoritarian military rule and economic exploitation have been a significant feature of Nigeria´s social and political development in the last decades and have stimulated the growth of numerous movements of opposition. These movements of opposition did advocate in various terms a restructuring of the Nigerian political system. In Northern Nigeria protest against established structures was often expressed by Islamic organisations that have since the 1970s started to attack the Nigerian state as such. Members of these Islamic movements of opposition have been repeated/y imprisoned on account of their radical stances and actions. In the 1990s, the Islamic Movement in particular has turned out to be an outspoken opponent to military rule in Northern Nigeria. The genesis of this radical Islamic movement of opposition and the religio-political context of its development in the 1980s and 1990s are analysed in this article.##
