Die Vergangenheit in der Gegenwart. Zeitkonzeptionen und ihre Handlungskontexte bei den Abelam in Papua-Neuguinea
Baessler-Archiv XLV.1997: 409-429

The past in the present. Time concepts and their action contexts among the Abelam of Papua New Guinea ##This article focuses on major theories of time and suggests that among the Abelam of Papua New Guinea there co-exist several concepts of time, each embedded in a specific context and a practice of its own. These five concepts - linear time, time as space, cyclical time, oscillating time and non-directed temporal space (or "the past in the present") - and their contexts of action are described along with the way they interact. Viewed together, these individual concepts constitute a coordinated dynamic system. Under conditions of cultural contact, such an integrated system may break up. Its individual components - the different time concepts and their contexts of action - become reorganized in a new way, which may produce the conceptual basis for millenarian movements.##

Keywords: time concepts, Abelam time concepts, space, millenarian movements
