Tasmanian stone artifacts and European pre-history research in the beginning 20th century. On the history of the Fritz Noetling collections
##At the turn of the 20th century, after the success of Darwin´s theory of evolution, important work in several disciplines was done on hominization and prehistory. Fritz Noetling lived in Tasmania from 1906 to 1919 and collected a considerable amount of stone artifacts made by the Aborigines there. He intended to make them available to European researchers. He compared them with an early stage in prehistory, the Eolithic or Archaeolithic stage. Using this example, it is shown in this article that in Noetling´s time this method of prehistoric research ultimately served in shaping racist conceptions. The stone artifact collections in German museums, however, should be included in modern archaeological research.##
