Artifact and empirical social research. Genesis and analysis of the critique
Hilgers deals with the major research instrument in sociology, empirical social research (from about 1870), criticism from outside and inside, the latter trying to improve it, to enhance its efficiency. As artifact in this context the authoress defines artificial products of empirical social research, i.e. resulting constructs which represent 'reality' in a 'wrong' way (invalid research results). Hilgers opines that artifact research will contribute to the establishment of an accurate, or appropriate form of research.
The book is divided into four major parts: 1) the genesis of the problem of artifact research (internally and externally); 2) an analysis of the reception of artifact research; 3) in this chapter the authoress traces sources of errors in the circuits of research and proposes a strategy for their avoidance; 4) the last chapter summarizes the results of the former ones and proposes a 'fourth strategy'.
Keywords: social research, sociology, method in sociology, 'artifacts' of research, representation, empirical research, critique of social research, research strategies
