Curare 20,1.1997:29-41

##Culture-bound syndromes - An obsolete concept of medical anthropology?
Culture-bound Syndromes (CBS) are still a central concept of Medical Anthropology. Various supporters have therefore developed different perspectives of analysing. The theoretical implications of the main views on culture-bound syndromes are developed in reference to various interpretations of the susto-phenomena. Their different claims of interpretation are evaluated and compared to the theoretical basics of CBS. These reflections will include the possibility of interpreting biomedical diseases as CBS. From an anthropological point of view the question is put forward, whether the concept of "culture-bound syndrome" ist still suitable for an analysis of cultural impacts in the wide domain of illness and disease.##
