Homeophobia and allophilia as a dilemma of German anthropology
##Contemporary German anthropology can be characterized by a radical rupture with national scholarly traditions. While there was a surprising continuity in the different branches of the schools of cultural history from the pre-war period until the late 1960's, the generation of the student movement searched for new theoretical orientations in British, French and American anthropologies. This tendency has become even stronger today. German anthropological traditions are neglected or despised, whereas theoretical approaches developed in other countries serve as a model. - If it is true that the longing for the other is a deep-rooted motivation in the anthropologist's vocational choice, this feeling has been enhanced in German anthropology by a definite dissociation with the nation's National Socialist past. As many leading figures of post-war anthropology in Germany were deeply involved with fascist ideology, the appeal to the new generation was to become associated with any anthropology other than German. This homeophobic attitude has created a dilemma which is difficult to resolve. Fifty Years after the end of Nazism, German anthropology is still in search for an identity of it's own.##
