##Contribution to an ethnography of social suffering
This paper discusses the possibilities to conceptualise ethnographic practice on the background of the concept of social suffering. The discourse analysis demonstrates how the category 'refugee' is formed and how social experiences of refugees is transformed within social science, medicine and the media. The main argument locates the relationship between language and pain at the centre of all types of investigation into the domain of trauma and empowerment. It is argued that the ethnography of social suffering with a focus upon pragmatics and rhetoric in the broad sense of the term, will be of critical importance for the analysis of current transformations taking place in locations like Frankfurt/Main. Here 'culture' is used as a device to avoid issues of a more existential concern.##
