On the delimitation of the East-Asian origin of the Paleo-Indian
##This paper presents new views on the question where the Asian origin of the earliest Americans can be located. Most of these views rely on worldwide studies by geologists, paleontologists, and prehistorians published in reports of the Center for the Study of the First Americans at Oregon State University. Corvallis.
The most interesting and long known area concerned with those Asiatic people who became the first Paleo-Indians is Siberia. In the article two of the Siberian regions which come into question are discussed: (I) the Diuktai sites east of Yakutsk at the East Siberian river Aldan, a tributary of the river Lena; (2) the Baykal Sea and Yenisey river areas. On point (1): In 1969 Diuktai material was presented first. After two decades of intensive research on those sites prehistorians decided against Diuktai as place of origin of those Paleo-Siberians who were going becoming the first Paleo-Indians. Some prehistorians admit however that Diuktai could be the original area of the second or third Paleo-Indian wave across Beringia. On point (2): Upper Paleolithic sites of the Baykal Sea and Yenisey regions are known since the twenties of this century. Several of the most important of those places are presented in the article. Although some Archeologists believe that they have found connections in stone material between some of those East Siberian sites and Alaska there is no definitive evidence for this thesis. Although hunter/gatherer societies show but little cultural change in the short run they change nevertheless in the long run. Concerning the long times of migration of those Paleolithic bands through Siberia and Beringia we have to consider acculturation processes with those Asiatic people who finally became Paleo-Indians. Under those circumstances isn"t it idle to search for cultural connections between Upper Paleolithic peoples separated thousands of years ago?##
