Die zerfranste Ethnie. Zum analytischen Umgang mit komplexen Gesellschaften

On the analytical treatment of complex societies
##In analyses and interpretations regarding group identity and group names, terms and related guided images are used which - as is argued here - can hardly do justice to the rapid changes which have taken place in recent decades. In presenting a semiotic model an analytical tool is proposed which, at least partially, makes for a better interpretational approach. Lived and variable common features can be shown and interpreted through diachronic structural relationships, even for "quilted" groups which are in a continuous state of breaking up and reintegration. This is exemplified by a case study of the Burji (Ethiopia and Kenya) which takes into account the emic point of view. The model may be useful for analysing similar cases in the "third world".##
