Der Krieg zwischen Idah und Benin ("Idah War") zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts
Tribus 46.1997: 95-108

The war between Idah and Benin in the beginning of the 16th century
##One of the most prominent events during the long history of the former Benin Kingdom was the invasion by the Igala, together with their allies, the Idoma, at the beginning of the 16th Century. The enemies advanced, obviously without meeting much resistance, up to Benin City. Only at the very gates of their capital city were the Edo able to halt the onslaught and drive back the enemies. Some Portuguese accompanying the then ruling monarch, Esigie, were obviously involved in the war. The use of their firearms, until then not known to either the Igala or the Edo, allowed the Edo to vanquish the invaders. Contemporary Portuguese sources and local oral traditions contain sufficient material to attempt an analysis of this war and its military operations.##
