The Boyar dress. Biography of an "incognito" object
##This article concerns the difficulties in seeking the true "biography" of certain objects. or at least their origins: In October 1997, the Berlin Museum für Völkerkunde received as a gift a Russian lady"s costume which had been bought at the end of the l9th century by a German business man in Moscow. He gave it to his sister-in-law, residing at that time in Aachen, Germany, as a souvenir. His granddaughter used this dress as a carnival costume during the 1930s in the Rhine land, and later in Stuttgart, southern Germany, before donating it to the Museum für Völkerkunde. Since she called it a "Boyar´s costume", we were ready to adopt this term, even if this kind of dress is definitely not that of a Boyar. We know of only one similar example in the St. Petersburg Hermitage"s collections, and designated there as a "townswoman´s costume in folk style". So our "Boyar´s costume" will be renamed "urban folkloristic dress", in the hope of further research on folkloric dress in Russia at the turn of the century.##
