Political implications of local women´s pilgrimages in Azerbaijan
##Following the theoretical outlines set by van Gennep and Turner, anthropologists usually treat pilgrimage as a structural phenomenon, a rite of passage, during which the pilgrim is temporarily released from the ordinary constraints of daily life. By shifting the analytical focus to the social context of pilgrimage, my examination of two predominantly female pilgrimage groups from an Azerbaijani village demonstrates how the relative composition of the local pilgrimage group has a political relevance which is primarily expressed by and through women. This different line of inquiry emerges as a fruitful exercise of our understanding of the phenomenon in question.##
