The "house" as a principle of social order.
A critical comparison utilizing Indo-Pacific cases
##This paper examines the analytical concept of the "house" which has recently been featured as providing a better understanding of some types of social structure. Initially this concept was introduced by Claude Lévi-Strauss with the aim of offering an alternative to descent theory in kinship systems lacking strictly unilineal principles. Following Lévi-Strauss, a rather heterogeneous multitude of "house"-societies has meanwhile been described in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. In this article, general as well as particular features of the "house" are examined in a number of societies. The comparative analysis suggests that although the "house" might prove to be an important theoretical tool in several instances, it cannot be regarded as a definite escape from both alliance and descent theory, because in many cases it seems to run the risk of becoming quite arbitrary.##
