The dream of the good life. Everyday history and consumerism from the German "economic miracle" until today
This book portrays lifestyles of the 1950s and 1960s in Germany, when for the first time in the post-war era consumer goods became accessible for the masses that had been status symbols of an economic upper class before. This democratization of goods had a negative side, too - high energy consumption and ecological crisis. This lifestyle portrait includes eating habits, housing, cars, vacation, money and time, popular culture and energy. A last chapter - "Asceticism and luxury" - focuses on the indirect costs of an materially individualized lifestyle and emerging different lifestyles, such as an ecologically conscious and responsible behavior.

Keywords: lifestyle in Germany, "economic miracle", consumerism in Germany, ecology and consumption
