This is a starting point for inhabitants to construct their identity: otherness, based on the secludedness of this island. At the same time present reality requires a "paradigmatic change", due to changes in the life world of öland, and a new cultural openness becomes imperative. The book is based on field research, interviews and the analysis of documents, and tries to show structural and ideological factors contributing to the construction of identity.
