On the principles of scientific work and publishing in the world wide web
##This article describes the function of the World Wide Web (www) as a tool for anthropologists. We argue that its potential is twofold: On the one hand, it offers a range of new techniques for the publication of scientific results. On the other hand exciting forms of co-operation between scientists are conceivable. We regard the WWW as the first common platform for the technical integration of heterogeneous information and as possible interface between science and society. We think that seven basic features make the WWW a unique instrument: the ability to combine different types of information, to write dynamic documents, to embed information in societal and cultural contexts and its public character. The WWW facilitates space and time independent co-operation, on-line analysis of data and on-line replication of results. There is a need for anthropology to deal with this innovation. It is very likely that modes of publication, working and teaching within the discipline will dramatically change in the near future.##
