Demographic preferences in the context of attitudes on development. Research among the Komo in former Zaire
##The object of the investigation is the theme "Demography and development" from the viewpoint of the population itself. A preference for good development at the costs of the reduction of the number of children was found, but also great differences, especially with regard to age, sex and profession. Besides these and other individual specialties also cultural specialties of the group investigated (the ethnic group of the Komo inhabiting the rain forest area in the Congo-Basin) were found. When nearly half of the male interviewees indicated that they formerly would have become male nurses, they attempted to use selectively an offer of modernity in order to realize the traditionally highest value of procreation against the real tendency of barrenness which was frequent in colonial times. With regard to methodology, this paper tries to build a bridge between traditional quantitative demography and recent trends of qualitative demography in trying to integrate these approaches.##

Keywords: demography and development, development attitudes (Komo), Komo and modernity
