McDoener: Dönerkebab and the struggle of German Turks for social esteem
##Dönerkebab is a fast food introduced and incorporated into the German market by Turkish immigrants living in Germany. Although it is regarded as the traditional ethnic food of Turkish immigrants, it is a new and hybrid product (in the form it is offered in Germany). This article focuses on the interplay between Dönerkebab and the other fast food items on the German market: how Döner effected the production and consumption of some other products and how it is itself influenced and transformed by the existing fast food. Through an analysis of the symbolic field of Dönerkebab in Germany and the changes it went through, this article aims to illustrate how German Turks' efforts to manipulate and transform the meanings and images of Dönerkebab are part of their attempts to refashion German Turks' image and place in German society. Thus, Dönerkebab became not only a social arena in which cultural belonging is formulated and asserted but also an arena for the social positioning struggle of German Turks.##
