The vision of research. How interactive interfaces in media laboratories are developed
Süßbrich asks how sensual perception can stimulate innovative creative work, and the role of ’medial interfaces´ in this process. Such work is done ­ in developing technology for the user, in making it sensually perceptible and usable - in media laboratories, the methodological and ideological approaches of which are analyzed by Süssbrich. This ethnographic study in the field of Folklore Studies (Volkskunde) portrays conrete scenarios from their research work showing how innovations are ’stage-setted´ in the interaction of science and economy, she shows how such technology is conceptualized, presented, and tested. The author deals with the question to which degree the power of technical manipulation is to be found ­ in biology and psychology, but first of all in the research practice creating meaning, and in the ethics of the developers. She met and talked with scientists at the ’Media Laboratory´ (MIT), and the Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik GmbH (GMD), their views, specific language, their teamwork, alliances, and the ’artificial´ character of their conversations.
